Market breadth showed broad based participation, with advancers well ahead of decliners on the NYSE.

Dow 30 Earnings: Wal-Mart Stores Fiscal First Quarter 2017

05/18/2017 General merchandise retailer, Wal-Mart Stores, (WMT) reported marginally better-than-expected results for the fiscal first quarter (years end January 31st). Total revenue rose 2.5% to $118.8 billion, slightly higher than our $118.0 billion estimate. Earnings per share of $1.00 came in at the high end of the $0.90-$1.00 guidance range, and surpassed our call by $0.03. Encouragingly, this marked the first quarterly EPS increase in more than two years.

Stock Market Today: May 15, 2017

05/15/2017 The stock market opened higher this morning, and managed to maintain its gains throughout the afternoon. At the end of the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 85 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was up 11 points; and the NASDAQ was higher by 28 points. Market breadth was favorable, with winners well ahead of losers on the NYSE. Essentially all of the major equity groups pressed ahead today.

Dogs Of The Dow: 2016 in Review

01/30/2017 The Dogs of the Dow investment strategy produced market-beating returns for 2016. A Dogs of the Dow portfolio (consisting of equally weighted positions in the top 10 highest yielding Dow issues at the start of the year) would have risen 16% on the year. The advance was led by Caterpillar (CAT), which was up more than 35% in price, while Chevron (CVX) rose just over 30%, good enough for second-best among the Dogs. Meanwhile, the leading equity benchmarks also participated in the stock market’s 2016 advance, though the gains on the NASDAQ and the S&P 500 couldn’t measure up to those posted by the Dogs.

01/12/2017 Business prospects for The Kroger Company (KR) are mixed. The company, along with the grocery store segment as a whole, has been dealing with some headwinds in recent quarters. These include a deflation in food prices, particularly for staples like eggs, milk, and meat, which has pressured same-store sales growth. Competition is also on the rise, as the company has to deal with both traditional competitors from the grocery sector, and non-traditional players that have been increasing their food-related revenues.
